In my experience: food and product retouching has been going on for as long as I can remember. As a photographer, graphic designer and a photoshop retoucher, my job was to beautify food products along with other things.

Have a look below at the before and after shot of a butterscotch cookie dipped in chocolate. As the photographer, I was required to photograph the best looking cookie in a box of at least fifty of these biscuits. I was lucky to find at least one that was worthy of being photographed. I then retouched it to make it look perfect. My next job was to design a catalogue brochure to showcase their cookie range. The client was ever so happy!
