All About Engagement Announcements

Wedding engagement announcements – like charity – usually begin at home. That is to say, with engagement announcement etiquette the first people to be told of the engagement should be both sets of parents. Traditionally, the young man would ask the future bride's father for her hand in marriage. These days – certainly in the west – the parents are informed and their blessing is asked for. Usually it is given freely (sometimes with great relief!).

In some cultures, arranged marriages are still in practice and the parents inform the young couple. Which ever custom is observed, the next step is to announce it to the world, usually this entails a flurry of phone calls or visits to family and closest friends. How to announce your engagement to the wider world – meaning colleagues and your wider circle of friends and aquaintances – may mean more formal pronouncements, these may entail newspaper announcements and/or engagement announcement cards.

The wording for engagement announcements is entirely up to you of course, though it may vary slightly depending on the circumstances, these being divorced or deceased parents or whether you wish to announce the engagement yourselves. Here's an example announcement below:

"Josephine Bloggs of Vaucluse and Jonathan Dough of Darling Point wish to announce their engagement to all their relations and friends".

We do however live in an electronic age, and such an announcement can easily be done on Facebook or Twitter or even a wedding blog. The choice is yours.
