Cover A Cake Using Buttercream
Here you'll learn how to make your own wedding cake and how to cover a cake using buttercream icing:
• | Place the first cake layer on the cake decorating turntable or Lazy Susan. |
• | Fill the piping bag with buttercream frosting, cut to fit the tip #789. |
• | Start applying buttercream frosting to the first cake layer. This will be the centre icing for your cake. |
• | Use the small offset spatula to smooth the buttercream. |
• | Position the next cake layer on top on of your frosting. Make sure to level your layers before hand placing another cake layer on top. |
• | Line up the layers and remove any crumbs around the bottom. |
• | Start icing the top cake layer and refill your piping bag if necessary. Apply buttercream icing to top cake layer first. |
• | Then apply buttercream icing to the sides of cake. |
• | With the small offset spatula start to smooth icing on top of cake and then the sides. |
• | Then use a large scaper to smooth the buttercream icing on the side. |
• | For the top of the cake use the large offset spatula the smooth the buttercream. |
• | Once you're happy with the sides start on the top of the cake with the large offset spatula. |
• | Now the frosting needs to 'crust' or dry a little. This will take about 7-15 minutes. Test by gently touching the frosting, if it sticks it is not ready for the paper towel step. |
• | keep checking the cake, when the frosting no longer sticks to your finger it is ready for smoothing. It it begins to stick to the towel, let it 'crust' for another 3-5 minutes. |
• | On top of the cake first; place Viva brand paper towel on top of almost dry icing and very gently iron the top of the towel from left to right using the smaller scraper. |
• | Lift paper towel and reposition and continue to scrape top icing until perfectly smooth. |
• | Then do the same to the side of the cake until perfectly smooth. |
• | The last step is to use the back of your hands and fingers on the paper towel to smooth the edges and missed bits of the cake, this gives it that finishing touch. |
• | You now have a perfectly smooth cake ready for your own unique wedding cake decorating ideas. |
