The festival of Halloween or `All Hallows Eve' for those of us who have seen more than a few Hollywood Horror movies, predates Christianity. It was originally based on the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which celebrated the end of the harvest. The disguises and masks were worn to appease the spirits of the dead who could curse the harvest. Old beliefs die hard, and the advent of Christianity put a alternative frame on past pagan festivals.
